Mountain Lions

Encounters with mountain lions are rare. But knowing what to do if you see one can help make you safer. Be aware, not afraid.

Important info about mountain lions

"People are the most likely to encounter cougars in areas frequented by mule deer and during the early morning and at dusk, when cougars are most likely to be hunting." - Darren DeBloois, Utah DWR

They will cover it with leaves, dirt, or snow. This is a sign cougars are around.

Prevent encounters with cougars

Do not hike or jog alone

Travel with others & keep everyone together

If you encounter a cougar

Stop. Never run from a cougar

Stand up tall - make yourself look big by waving your arms or jacket

Pick up children and pets or keep them very close

Talk firmly in a loud voice, back away slowly, & leave the area
